Red like fire, red like blood, red like a heart burning with love.
Perhaps this is the color, the first of the rainbow, that has always been loaded with greater meanings, including the power represented by priestly, royal, aristocratic red (i.e. cardinal red).
Even before Jean-Antoine Peyssonnel demonstrated in 1773 that it belonged to the animal world, coral was associated with the most varied powers: medical, magical, mystical. It is considered a precious stone, but in reality it is a small polyp that secretes a branched calcareous skeleton, which can be pink, white or red.
According to Ovid, who tells of it in his Metamorphoses, it originated from the blood of Medusa’s head, killed by Prometheus to free Andromeda, that gave it this color.
Since ancient times, the coral was abudantly spread in the Mediterranean Sea and in the 15th century Naples and Trapani assumed hegemony in coral fishing in the seas of Sardinia, Sicily and along the coasts of Africa.
The coral beads that decorate this handcuff type bracelet have a particularly warm color, different from the bright red of red coral (Rubrum), typical of the Mediterranean area. This is the Sicilian coral from Sciacca, very precious and sought-after, which stands out for the uniqueness of its color tones that range from intense orange to pale salmon-pink.
The central part of the bracelet is made in the shape of a flower which petals are formed by five coral beads from which four silver leaves derive, each one further embellished with delicate seed-pearls.
Two rows of bright corals decorate the entire circumference of the bracelet.
The bracelet, complete with its safety chain in metal, bears the hallmark “800” nearby the clasp to indicate the silver fineness of 800/1000.
The settings is of Northern European taste, most likely German, dating back to the late 19th – early 20th century.
